Thelonnious Monk with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall Review
Thelonnious Monk with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall
Thelonnious Monk with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall Rating:
This is as good as good as it gets. Two Giants of Jazz Theloniuos Monk and John Coltrane live at the legendary Carnegie Hall. This album was originally recorded on November 29th, 1957. The recording was essentially lost for almost 50 years and then found and published in 2005. I for one am eternally grateful for the music. Lost music of this caliber performed by either musician would have been enough to make me stand and cheer while listening to my stereo. The two together with Monk on Piano and Coltrane an saxophone have me screaming encore.
This disk covers both sultry Jazz sounds and upbeat rhythms showcasing both performers unique talents and range. My favorite piece on the disk is Sweet and Lovely, a nine minute piece that will evoke every musical emotion. Give this CD a try! Thank you Blue Note.
